NEWS: Darin Rough!?
Fantasy Impact: Darin Ruf has been terrible this spring. While Dominic Brown looks great and figures to have playing time all but locked up heading into 2013, Ruf has struggled at the plate and in the field this spring. Each error in the field amplifies the chances that Ruf will open the year at Triple-A.
Fantasy Impact: Aaron Hicks, batting .318 this spring, looks like the early leader in the competition for the starting center field competition against Darin Mastroianni. Although battling through some bumps and bruises Mastroianni is hitting .364 in 11 AB. So it’s still very uncertain that Hicks will win the starting job even if he has the best spring, as the Twins may still want to keep him in Triple-A for arbitrary purposes.
NEWS: Reunited and it feels so good?
Fantasy Impact: Mark Prior signs a minor league deal with the Reds, reuniting him with Dusty Baker. In 2012 at Triple-A Prior did post a 13.7 SO/9 rate but will have to be sharp in order to earn a look at a shot with the Reds. We all know Dusty Baker loves his veteran players. Keep tabs on him.
NEWS: Puig to start in left field on Opening Day for Dodgers?
Fantasy Impact: Still unknown to the LA Organization is the status of Carl Crawford‘s elbow. So to handle the left field job Jerry Hairston, Alex Castellanos, and Skip Schumaker figure to be to have the inside track. But, Yasiel Puig is impressing by leap and bounds, this spring hitting over .400 average could force his way into the lineup sooner than expected. The Cuban product has great power so it’s something to observe closely in deep mixed leagues.
NEWS: Arenado is “en fuego”
Fantasy Impact: Nolan Arenado hit his fourth home run of spring on Monday in a loss to the Mariners. Arenado’s start Monday was his third in as many days and the third straight game in which he has homered. Now batting .412 this spring and is making a strong push for the starting job at third base, Chris Nelson remains the favorite for the starting job at third but if Arenado continues to rake it will be difficult for the Rockies to send him to Triple-A to start the season Although he has never played above the Double-A level. Monitor.
NEWS: Kyle Lohse Still a Free Agent?
Fantasy Impact: Its seems as if Texas Rangers are the leaders in the clubhouse for Lohse’s services this 2013 season. Coming off a career year in which he posted a 2.86 ERA it’s a bit strange that Lohse is still on the market. The fear is no way he maintains the reasonable success he has had the last two years. Still, he is someone who owners can take a late game flier on and wait to see where he lands.
