NEWS: Bruce Rendon To be Closer?
Fantasy Impact: Tigers manager Jim Leyland has played it close to vest on his closer, and says its still up in the air. Rendon is still the favorite but monitor the situation in Tigers’ Spring Training leading up to your drafts. The upside skill he possesses should allow for him a reasonable chance at success. but only if he improves his control.
NEWS: Ryan Cook or Grant Balfour?
Fantasy Impact: Grant Balfour is out for 4-6 weeks due to a minor knee injury that requires arthroscopic surgery. Cook is likely to get the first shot at closing games for the A’s if Balfour is not ready to start the year. But according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Balfour played catch on Tuesday and felt great. He looks to have a very good shot to be ready to pitch right around Opening Day. If he slips in your draft due to the injury, he could become a very good value to target or grab off waivers.
NEWS: Jedd Gyorko to play Second base?
Fantasy Impact: Defensively, he is a liability at the position. But as starved as the San Diego Padres are for offense it makes sense. Keep a close eye on his Spring Training as he could become a nice sleeper candidate heading into 2013. Last year, he batted .328 and hit 24 home runs at Triple-A Tucson.
NEWS: Darin Ruf and Dominic Brown have a chance to at playing time early.
Fantasy Impact: Delmon Young is out with ankle injury until at least May. Prized prospect Dominic Brown, Darin Ruf, John Mayberry and Laynce Nix are all in line for extended playing time in left and right field to start the year.
NEWS: Jonny Gomes to get a crack at right-handed pitching? Not so fast…
Fanatsy Impact: Gomes, a career .233 hitter versus right-handed pitching, figured to be a part-time left-fielder with Boston in 2013. Farrell may let Gomes face right-handers this season. That is until the Red Sox made a trade for Mike Carp. The addition of another Left-handed hitter screams platoon. Avoid.
NEWS: Hosmer to bat third again?
Fantasy Impact: According to the Kansas City Star, Eric Hosmer will return to the three hole in the batting order. After a nightmarish sophomore season in where he hit .230, Manager Ned Yost wants to get the young First Baseman’s confidence back, hopefully solidifying Hosmer’s sleeper value in 2013.
NEWS: Tony Campana traded to Arizona
Fantasy Impact: After the Cubs signed Scott Hairston last week, Campana became the odd man out. Quickly, The Arizona Diamondbacks scooped him up. All this guy does is steal bases but he will have to earn the playing time this by having a solid Spring.
NEWS: Mat Gamel done for the year.
Fantasy Impact: Another knee injury derails his career as an ACL injury puts him on the shelf for 2013. Terrible news for the Brewers, who figured to have Gamel replace Corey Hart while he recovers from his injury.
NEWS: Dee Gordon to start the year in Triple-A
Fantasy Impact: With Hanley Ramirez looking good at his more natural position in shortstop. Dee Gordon’s playing time takes a hit. The speedster has to have an amazing Spring to make the Opening Day Roster.
